week 6
I recently read an article in the newspaper from my hometown, Muncie, Indiana, on the internet. Im not from a small town but it is by no means big. The article was talking about a new day care that was opening soon. It was in the newspaper because it was a 24-hour day care. The first one we have ever had. I don't know if they have those here in Utah. Or anywhere else for that matter. I have never heard of a 24-hour day care before. The women running the day care were very happy to be opening and they were quoted saying how they were surprised no one thought of it before.
My first reaction was a good one. I thought that it was a good idea and how much it will help those people that work at night. But the more I thought about how it would work out, the more I didn't like the idea. I think it is helpful to those who really do need somewhere for their kids to stay if they work at night, but I think that people will take advantage of it. I personally think that kids should be at home to sleep. They should be somewhere where they are comforted and can sleep well. Not in a day care. But then I think about those parents out there that are struggling with drugs or alcohol that would drop off their kids at the day care. The kids would definately be more safe at the day care than with their drunk parent. It has its advantages and disadvantages.
I try and think of the effects it would have on the child. Like if they wet the bed or have nightmares. There will be other kids there that could give them a hard time. They may start to think that they are suppossed to sleep with other kids. Boys and girls together. But if they are young enough then it wont matter. If parents work during the day and they want to go out at night, their child will be at day care all day. It wont matter how late the parent comes home so the child will have been at the day care all day and then sleep there. They wont know anything but day care. I just cant see how that would be a good thing to have your child at day care all the time, even over-night.
I don't know how I feel about it. I would like to know how it goes and if it is something that will be kept in my city.
